Its biggest advantage is not simply damage. Smoke is an Elemental fruit, which gives it useful defensive properties against suitable NPCs as you progress through early areas. Blade is the more interesting choice if you care about fighting sword users. Its passive can protect the user against sword attacks, and the fruit also has an M1 attack, movement options and several low mastery abilities.

S Tier: Smoke and Blade
Smoke gets the top spot for a typical beginner because its Elemental type is useful while grinding early NPCs.
Blade belongs beside it because its sword protection gives it a use that remains different from the other Common fruits. Blade can also use M1 attacks and has surprisingly useful early game mobility.
A Tier: Bomb
Bomb is cheap enough for an early player and has more offensive potential than most fruits in this rarity. It has five listed moves and is currently described as the highest damaging Common fruit.
B Tier: Spike and Spring
Spike costs more than every other Common fruit at the dealer, but a higher purchase price does not automatically make a fruit better for grinding or PvP.
Spring is more interesting for movement than for pure damage. Its Spring Leap and other movement focused abilities can make it fun to use, but most players will eventually want a stronger grinding fruit.
C Tier: Rocket
Rocket is the cheapest fruit in the game at 5,000 Money or 50 Robux. It gives a new account access to fruit abilities for almost no investment and includes a Blast Off movement skill.
D Tier: Spin
Spin can work as a temporary starter fruit, but there is little reason to chase it once stronger options become available. Its moves include Razor Wind, Tornado Assault, Air Slasher and Helicopter Flight.
Rocket
Rocket is a Common Natural fruit costing 5,000 Money or 50 Robux.
Its four main abilities are Missile Fist, Air Strike, Rocket Crash and Blast Off. Because its first attack unlocks at mastery 1, a new player can start using it immediately.
Rocket makes sense when you have almost nothing else. Do not judge it by late game standards. Its job is to give a new account cheap attacks and some movement while you search for something better.
Spin

It gives access to Razor Wind, Tornado Assault, Air Slasher and Helicopter Flight. The flight skill unlocks at mastery 25, while Air Slasher requires mastery 90.
Spin is easy to obtain, but it is generally a temporary fruit. If you roll Smoke or Blade while using Spin, the replacement is usually worth considering.
Blade
Blade costs 30,000 Money or 100 Robux.
This is the fruit older players may remember as Chop. Update 24 reworked Chop and renamed it Blade, changing its moves and adding an M1 ability.
Blade’s main advantage is its unusual defense against sword attacks. The fruit can block sword based damage, including many attacks from swords using Aura. That makes Blade much more useful against sword users than its Common rarity might suggest. Bosses and some special attacks have exceptions, so the passive should not be treated as complete immunity to everything in the game.
Blade also has Razor Cyclone, Blade Dance, Saw Shredder and Turbine Flight. The combination of M1 attacks, low mastery requirements and sword protection makes it one of the more useful Common fruits.
Spring
Spring costs 60,000 Money or 180 Robux.
Its moves are Knock, Spring Snipe, Spring Cannon, Spring Emperor and Spring Leap. Spring Emperor requires 125 mastery, making Spring one of the Common fruits that asks players to spend more time unlocking the complete moveset.
Spring is mostly worth considering for movement and fun rather than long term grinding efficiency.
Bomb
Bomb costs 80,000 Money or 220 Robux.
Its moves include Targeted Bomb, Bomb Grab, Land Mines, Self Destruct and Explosive Jump. Bomb is currently identified by the Blox Fruits Value Wiki as the highest damaging fruit in the Common rarity.
That makes Bomb a better choice than its rarity might make you expect if your alternatives are other basic Common fruits.

Smoke stands out because none of the other current Common fruits are Elemental. That makes it a strong early game grinding option and, for many First Sea players, the Common fruit most worth eating.
If your choice is between Smoke and Rocket, Spin, Spring or Spike for normal early grinding, Smoke is usually the more practical pick.
Spike
Spike is the most expensive Common fruit at the dealer, costing 180,000 Money or 380 Robux. It is a Natural fruit.
Its current moves are Spike Summon, Whirlwind, Spiky Ball and Spike Barrage.
